I still having trouble sweep picking. Im not sure if its my technique or its just that im too slow. I can play scales pretty well, like the solo on pull harder before the harmony solo bit. So based on that would it be my tech or speed? Trying to play things like this
---------------------11-14-11-----------------
-----------------12------------12--------------
-------------13-------------------13-----------
---------12--------------------------12--------
-11-14---------------------------------14p12-
-------------------------------------------------

I absolutely loath Angelo. He couldn't put more chorus and reverb on his tone if he tried.
On that note. for the sweepting, theres not much you can do but practice slow. For sweeping, the thing you want to remember is:
right hand and left hand coordination. it seems like it should be easy, but its not. Picking and freting hand coordination is the hardest part of sweeping.
on another note, that is quite possiblu the most disgusting arpgeio ive ver played. thats awful sounding, and the fingering is ridiculous. try some easier shapes at first. major/minor ones.

I really suck at fast gallop picking like in "The Deceived". I have been practicing for almost a year now, and I still can't get them down.

Does anyone know of any good theory books out there to help with writing soloes that melt some fucking faces?

You wont need books. You just need to learn scales and then used those scales in the key that you need to play them in.

Just buy Petrucci's DVD, get Friedman's Melodic Control too which is really awesome for teaching you cool little tricks to add dynamics to your solos without them sounding like scalar runs. The dude is a monster at improv.
