retro nu metal thread
September 16, 2009 1:57:59 AM UTC Post #1

I know some of you like me got into heavy stuff during the nu metal period just wondering what bands of that period you still occasionally into. I blame the ipod socket in the car driving back from damnation for this thread as myself and my mates were listening to stuff we did as teens.

the list of acceptable nu metal bands
deftones
disturbed (sickness era)
system of a down
korn (early)
papa roach
slipknot
lostprophets (early)
Kill 2 This
Coal Camber
skindred/dub war
soulfly
one minute silence

add to the list and discuss

You know, I'd say that those bands that ere acceptable are so because they're not really just nu-metal. I'd say System never really fitted into the nu-metal tag at all, they were waaaaay better than that. Slipknot and Soulfly don't fit in too well either.
But whatever you label them as, some of these bands are actually really good. Because of my age there is no way I couldn't love System of a Down, Deftones are a class act, and if you look past their fans Slipknot have some tunes.
I will say though that I'd never put Disturbed on a list of 'acceptable' bands

Two words. Linkin Park.

Linkin Park? Another two words: Pro tools.
They do have some good tunes though, but listening to Hybrid Theory is very difficult once you notice that pretty much every song has the same intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorus x2-middle bit-chorus structure that gets really tiring.

I used to proper love them when I was a young Mattie. Hybrid Theory on all the time.
Slipknot are still cool
I could never get into Korn.
Soulfly's nu metal stuff is ok in small doses. Nu metal isn't totally bad... but in general it's nothing amazing either!

during the nu metal days i used to be into Slipknot, korn, system of a down and limp bizkit alot, but that only lasted like a year or two.
I dont consider Soulfly ever being a nu metal band, they only got that tag because they came out at that time and because Roots is pretty much the nu metal bible.

Having a guest appearance by Fred Durst on their first album probably helped though ... well, that and the rather cringeworthy Jumpdafuckup.
I never liked nu-metal, thought it was the worst thing to happen to metal ever. The only good bands were the ones that never really fitted into nu-metal but were just lumped in with "the scene", SOAD being a case in point who were always more of a metalised Dead Kennedys more than anything else as well as smaller bands that never really made any headlines like Pulkas, Out's first album and Primary Slave who all got tagged as "nu-metal" at one time or other but never really fitted in to that scene. I always had a bit of a fondness for Deftones' White Pony album but their other stuff has dated terribly and the less said about the likes of Papa Roach, Disturbed and Linkin Park the better really.
I always preferred the bands that came immediately before nu-metal (and undoubtedly had a hand in inspiring a lot of those bands) like Prong, White Zombie and Faith No More etc who I always thought while superficially similar in a lot of ways just had that "something" that nu-metal bands lacked.

Ok, theyve also had guest appearences by Tom Araya and David Vincent, lol.
Guest appearences dont make a band a certain genre, at all.

Never said they did... but it goes some way to explaining why Soulfly were lumped in with the nu-metal masses by the average fan in the street. Bleed is undeniably a nu-metal song though.
