I cant get sweep picking down, as hard as I may try. Are there any tips out there that could help me with this technique?

Yea what those guys said, try 3 string first, slow as you can, then gradualy build up your speed, make it sound good slow then ull gain speed, then try 5 then 6 if you want to progress lol

You're not alone .
It took me a while too,
but if you start out with 3-string sweeps with a metronome set really slow
and a bit faster every time you master a particular speed,
you'll nail it

Find an instruction video, memorize the technique and how to properly use it, then take yourself to a metronome. Be sure to use more than 1 arpeggio, preferably all of the shapes you can find ranging from 3 to 6 sting sweeps.
It's an easy technique to master, just takes a good amount of time

yea true if you got it down once then it's way easier. im currently learning 5 string sweeps.

Yeah right now, I'm currently working on a 3 string sweep. The 6 string sweep in Detonation is a bit above my ability right now lol.

It's not too bad if you start off really slow get your arpeggio down and play it sweep style making sure you hear each note clearly on it's own without making other notes ring - you want to mute the strings you dont want to hear on the way down with your palm or some people use their thumb knuckle. Once you've got it clear and clean just start doing it slightly faster - a few bpm - make sure you do it to a metronome or some kind of beat.
Here's a 5 string 2 part one from 'Bastard Chain' by Soilwork which is quite easy and is played slow enough in the song for you to play along to -

----------------12h14-11----------------
-------------13----------12-------------
----------14----------------11----------
-------14----------------------13-------
-12h15----------------------------14----
----------------------------------------
---^----^--^--^--^-----U--U--U--U--U------

paste it into notepad if it dont look right!
it shouldnt take more than a couple of months to be able to sweep - mastering it takes a little while though - especially fast!

yeah start off with 3 strings, do 2 or 3 shapes with that, then slowly build up. you not going to sound epic like matt n corey over nite. im still on the 3 string stuff. im jsut starting to do 5 string. just a matter of coordination

Hi, I'm new to this awesome forum. Dunno if it's any help, but try using a metronome and set it to about 66 bpm. And then sweep on a clean channel and one note per beat to start. Then divide the beats into 1/2, 1/4 etc. Then you will hopefully become fluent and used to the shape. Speed isn't so much the important part, but clean notes where they should be played, and deaden the notes that aren't meant to ring. Also tilt the plectrum sorta like 45 degree angle when down sweeping.
