Billy Powell, Lynyrd Skynyrd Keyboardist, Dead at 56
Billy Powell, original keyboardist for Southern rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd, died this morning at his home just outside Jacksonville, Fla. He was 56.
According to an Associated Press report and Orange Park Police Lt. Mark Cornett, Powell called 911 Emergency about 12:55 a.m. Wednesday from his condominium saying he was having trouble breathing. Rescue crews were sent to the condo and performed CPR on Powell, but he was pronounced dead at 1:52 a.m.
Cornett told the AP that Powell had missed a Tuesday appointment with his doctor for a cardiac evaluation, and that Powell may have suffered a fatal heart attack. Cornett added that no foul play is suspected.
A post on the official Lynyrd Skynyrd Web site reads, "“A Great Loss — Beloved Pianist for the Lynyrd Skynyrd Band, Billy Powell, passed away last night. We will post more info shortly. The family and band request your respect and understanding during this difficult time. Thank you.â€
The band has reportedly cancelled all upcoming shows, and is asking fans to check the Web site for any future tour updates.
Powell's death leaves guitarist Gary Rossington as the only member of the current lineup that played on the band's 1973 debut album, Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd. A report in the Jacksonville Times-Union said the band's current members will meet over the next few weeks to decide its future.
Larkin Collins, father of original guitarist Allen Collins and co-owner of the Lynyrd Skynyrd name along with Rossington and Judy Van Zant Jenness, widow of original singer Johnny Van Zant, told the Times-Union, "I can't say it's over. It depends on Gary. As far as I'm concerned, if Gary wants to stay out on that stage, then we'll try to help him."
Ross Schilling, Skynyrd's co-manager, told the Times-Union, "The band will get together, the estates will get together, and the decision will be made collectively what to do. We're talking about human beings and lives and families; I think everyone's very civil to each other in the organization — associates and partners and friends and families. They'll get together, and that will be a private discussion."
Powell joined Lynyrd Skynyrd permanently in 1973 after first serving as one of its roadies. His exemplary keyboard work was featured prominently in many of the band's early hits, including the epic "Freebird."
Powell, along with drummer Artimus Pyle, bassist Leon Wilkinson, and guitarists Rossington and Collins, survived the Oct. 20, 1977 plane crash that took the lives of Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and singer Cassie Gaines. Despite severe injuries to his face, Powell was the first to be released from the hospital, and the only band member to attend the burial services for the victims of the crash.
In the accident's wake, Powell joined a Christian rock band, but eventually rejoined his surviving bandmates when Skynyrd reunited in 1987. He remained with the band until now. He was married to Ellen Vera Powell and had four children.
Lynyrd Skynyrd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.

Dude, who's goin to this one? It's a really small venue but its amazing and up close to the bands. Oh, I have another question as well: Is it gonna be with Slipknot and Coheed & Cambria or just a secret show?
